Manish Sisodia held a sit-in outside EC’s office in New Delhi, demanding immediate action against those allegedly intimidating Jaiwala. BJP dismissed the allegations as “baseless”.
AAP says nominee ‘abducted’; neta emerges, opts out of poll
An AAP candidate reported “kidnapped” by his party shortly after his nomination for the Surat East seat passed scrutiny on Tuesday dramatically resurfaced the next day to withdraw from the polls, saying he couldn’t afford to spend Rs 80 lakh to Rs 1 crore on campaigning.
Amid heavy police presence and a sprinkling of AAP and BJP workers, Kanchanlal Jariwala turned up at Surat’s Bahumali Bhavan that houses the election office on Wednesday and submitted a request for withdrawal of his nomination to the designated official. A video of him purportedly handing over the requisite form and verbally confirming his decision was released later.
The AAP leadership, including Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and his colleague Manish Sisodiya, claimed Jariwala backed out under duress from BJP, an allegation he denied in the video. He blamed AAP workers for his decision instead, alleging they refused to campaign for him unless he threw money.
“I was with my son’s friends (since the kidnapping rumour started). I had requested AAP to find some other candidate as I was unable to spend such a sum of money on campaigning. I switched off my phone after repeated calls from AAP workers and party functionaries. I wasn’t pressured by BJP into withdrawing my form,” he is purportedly heard saying in the video.
Sisodiya held a sit-in outside the Election Commission‘s office in New Delhi, demanding immediate action against those allegedly intimidating his party’s candidate in one of Gujarat’s high-profile seats.
“Jariwala and his family had been missing since Tuesday, and our party workers were searching for him. He was kidnapped, thrashed and threatened into withdrawing his nomination form,” AAP’s Gujarat president Gopal Italia said.
In Ahmedabad, the party’s joint election in-charge Raghav Chadha said, “Our candidate Kanchan Jariwala was in the custody of BJP goons since Tuesday morning. This is a case of kidnapping. When he did not buckle under pressure to withdraw his candidature, he was kidnapped and taken to an undisclosed location.”
BJP dismissed the allegations as “baseless”, with its Surat unit chief Niranjan Janjmera telling reporters Jariwala remaining the AAP candidate for Surat East would have benefited the saffron party more.
