Coimbatore: The city crime branch police on Thursday arrested a 29-year-old man for cheating 13 men of 15.7 lakh by promising to get them jobs in New Zealand. Police have seized 44 original passports and a car from him.
An investigation officer identified the accused as S Tamilselvan, a native of Palacode in Dharmapuri district. He was, however, residing at Murugan Nagar at Hudco Colony in the city.
Tamilselvan, the officer said, was running a placement firm named ST Global Placement Service at Peelamedupudur in the city for the past two years. “He advertised about the firm on Facebook and many youths from across the state approached him for a job abroad.”
According to the officer, D Vijay, 34, of Sellur in Madurai district, met Tamilselvan at his office last year and paid1.5 lakh to get a job in New Zealand. “He was promised the job of a supervisor in New Zealand with a hefty salary. Tamilselvan issued fake appointment letters to Vijay and other 12 victims and received 15.7 lakh from them in total.”
When Tamilselvan failed to get him a job abroad and refused to return the amount he paid, Vijay on Wednesday lodged a complaint with city police commissioner V Balakrishnan, who directed the city crime branch police to register a case. “Among the duped were people from Madurai, Chennai, Tenkasi and Thoothukudi districts. We registered a case against Tamilselvan under sections 406, 420, 465, 468 and 471 of the Indian Penal Code and arrested him today (Thursday),” the officer said.
