Padampur bypoll: Parties wait for last moment to file nomination | Bhubaneswar News

BHUBANESWAR: All the political parties are waiting for the last moment to file their nomination for the December 5 Padampur byelection in their bid not to annoy the farmers who constitute 80% of the 2.5 lakh voters in the assembly seat.
Rajbodasambar Krushak Sangathan, a farmers’ outfit, which has been staging a dharna in Padampur from November 1 demanding payment of crop insurance, had requested the parties not to file papers till their problems are resolved. Though the nomination was open from November 10, no contestant filed papers till Wednesday evening.
While nobody wanted to be the first to dodge the farmers’ requests, BJP and BJD used the time to announce sops for the cultivators. The Naveen Patnaik-led government announced Rs 200 crore input subsidy on Tuesday and the Centre gave its nod for insurance payout to woo the farmers.
Senior BJD leader and Bhatli MLA Susanta Singh, said from the very beginning BJD had planned that its nominee, Barsha Singh Bariha, will file nomination either on Wednesday or Thursday. “She will file on Thursday,” he said.
BJP contestant Pradip Purohit said the farmers are with the BJP and understand who will stand by them. “I will file nomination on Thursday,” he said.
Odisha PCC president Sarat Pattanayak said Congress nominee Satya Bhusan Sahu, too, will file nomination on the last day.
Farmer leader Ramesh Mohapatra said they feel happy as at least the parties have listened to their problems.
