Piccolo Made Dragon Ball’s Deadliest Villains Even Stronger

Even though Piccolo has become one of the greatest heroes in Dragon Ball history, he has accidentally made nearly every villain much more powerful.

Despite the fact that Piccolo is one of the greatest heroes in Dragon Ball history (after he grew out of being a deranged villain, that is), Piccolo has a nasty habit of making Dragon Ball’s deadliest evil-doers even stronger.

Piccolo began his Dragon Ball career as the Demon King Piccolo who was the concentrated evil of Earth’s god, Kami, made incarnate. After King Piccolo was defeated by Goku, he produced an egg containing his reincarnated form–the version of Piccolo fans know and love today. While Piccolo initially wanted to continue in the footsteps of his ‘father’ by killing Goku and throwing the world into chaos, he eventually teamed up with the Z-Fighters and has since become one of Earth’s most committed defenders. However, it seems as though Piccolo can’t shake his inherent evil side, because on no less than three separate occasions, he has accidentally made powerful villains even more terrifying.

In Dragon Ball chapter 500 by Akira Toriyama, Gohan is in the middle of his battle with Majin Buu, and while he had the upper hand at the beginning of the fight, Buu did something that gave him a significant edge: he absorbed Gotenks and Piccolo. Previously, Gohan had been training with the Kais of his universe, and with their help, he became the strongest version of himself and perhaps even one of the most powerful fighters in the cosmos. In short, Gohan was way stronger than Buu when the villain was in his base form, though once Buu absorbed Gotenks and Piccolo, he surpassed even Gohan. While Buu got the majority of his power-up from Gotenks, there is one thing he derived from Piccolo that gave him an added edge over Gohan: Piccolo’s intelligence.

Piccolo Unwittingly Helped Frieza, Cell, and Majin Buu

Piccolo makes DBZ villains stronger.

Buu originally had the intelligence of a child, but after absorbing Piccolo, he became much smarter–and by extension, much deadlier. While this is the latest example of Piccolo accidentally helping a villain within the Dragon Ball Z era, it certainly wasn’t the first. Way back at the start of DBZ, Piccolo told a dying Raditz all about the wish-granting power of the Dragon Balls for no good reason, and Raditz transmitted that conversation through his scouter back to Frieza who learned of the Dragon Balls this way and launched his own crusade to find them–meaning Piccolo was responsible for starting the Frieza Saga. Then, when Cell traveled back in time to attain ultimate power, Cell stole Piccolo’s power of regeneration–a power that made the villain virtually unkillable.

When Piccolo got absorbed by Buu, it was just the latest in a long line of him unwittingly helping Dragon Ball’s deadliest villains get even stronger–a troubling trend that, unfortunately (and perhaps unfairly) puts Piccolo right at the center of some of the greatest atrocities in Dragon Ball canon.
